Objective

Leaders for the technology-driven transformation of the media industry.

The media industry is facing enormous tasks. Digitization and datafication need to be incorporated through the development of innovative media products, and the ever more finely distributed audience must be reached and enthused. Current opportunities in the digital world must be exploited to the full, and through this process, new tasks are emerging at the interfaces of media, management, and digital technologies – in some cases even in specially dedicated innovation labs.

The only thing missing are managers for the tasks of these teams. For the time being. Because Media Management and Technology – with its broad, application-oriented approach to the media industry and its combination of management expertise and technical knowledge – creates precisely the skills that media companies need for their transformation and innovation efforts.

In addition to leading teams, the Master's in Media Management and Technology therefore focuses on the management of innovations and change processes as well as scientific research.

Career prospects

Modern managers for the new challenges of the media.

Disruptive developments in the media industry are giving rise to new areas of responsibility and organizational structures within companies that have one thing in common: Even management positions are often filled by young personnel, because the tasks require skills and knowledge that have not been widely available until now.

Graduates of the Master's program in Media Management and Technology take on these management tasks at the interfaces of media, management and digital technology (among other things) through such job positions as:

  • Product Manager/Product Owner,
  • Senior Manager in strategic management or business development
  • Strategic Marketing Manager,
  • Head of innovation labs,
  • Founder of a media start-up.

Common to all fields of application is the prerequisite of a qualitative analytical ability. Assessing the benefits of innovations requires comprehensive research in a professional context. At the same time, the Media Management and Technology degree program not only qualifies students for demanding activities in a professional context, but also for further academic development such as a dissertation.

Structure

Triad of leadership, research, and innovation for the future of media.

A media study program in Mittweida is unique – The theoretical foundation is consistently combined with practical experience. Media Management and Technology is a master's program at the interface between management and technology, which does not exist in this form elsewhere in the German-speaking world.

In addition to digital business models, international management, and interactive media applications, the program focuses in particular on innovation management. In-depth knowledge of digital sales models, data and business analytics, as well as change and start-up management, form the basis for shaping change in the media.

By choosing two Master Classes in the first two semesters, individual focal points are set. With two Master Classes each in Journalism, Business, Marketing and Creative Production, there are a total of eight options to choose from in order to deepen knowledge in the editorial/content and economic/business profile.

In addition, scientific research methods are applied to the media context. Empirical social research, applied media research and media analysis, as well as theories and models of media and communication, are part of the curriculum. Quantitative and qualitative research methods are integrated into the curriculum through student research projects.
